Bible: how to read it, and the life of Christ
Four units, 72+ hours: What Kind of Book Is This, Covenant, and the Life of Christ in two parts. A student reads the King James passage themselves, talks through three questions with you, and writes something nearly every week in one notebook kept all year.
English language arts
Eight units: Reading With Evidence, Theme vs. Topic, Figurative Language and Author's Craft, Writing Arguments, Reading Across Two Texts, Writing to Inform, Narrative Craft, and a year-end Cumulative Synthesis. It follows the Common Core State Standards.
Mathematics
Eight units: Ratios and Rate Reasoning, Dividing Fractions, the Decimal System, Negative Numbers and the Coordinate Plane, Expressions with Variables, Equations and Proportional Relationships, Area, Surface Area and Volume, and Statistical Distributions.
Science: Earth and space
Nine units, from modeling the Sun-Earth-Moon system and the solar system through rocks, plate tectonics, weathering, the water cycle and weather, to natural hazards. One unit, The Earth God Made, is the Creation unit. Science follows the Next Generation Science Standards for everything else.
The ancient world, and the rest of the week
Eight units: What Makes a Civilization, Mesopotamia, Egypt and Kush, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, Rome, and Legacies. Physical Education, Spanish (¡Empecemos!) and Home Base: Practical Arts and Life Skills are separate courses for grades 6-8.
What this is not
- It is a lot of courses. Sixth grade has about eight, and you decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is a screen-based curriculum apart from PE and the table portion of the Bible lesson.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course slows down, and you can set courses to a lower grade.
