Start 30 days freeThe American Story Begins: Peoples, Contact, and a New Nation is a year-long American history course of eight units and 25+ hours that starts before Columbus and ends with the Constitution.
The eight units
Nations Before Contact. Contact and Consequence. Colonial Life, Region by Region. The Road to Revolution. Fighting for Independence. A Nation Tries to Govern Itself. Framing a New Government. The American Story: Looking Back, Looking Forward.
A fuller start
A child learns that North America was full of established nations before Europeans arrived, then traces why Europeans crossed the ocean and how colonies grew up differently region by region, including the reality of slavery and indentured servitude.
Why it broke, how it was won
The course covers why the colonies broke from Britain, how the war was actually won, and how the country built, and then rebuilt, its own government.
The skill at the end
By June a child can read a real historical document and make an argument from it, not just recite dates.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is a survey of the founding era. The story continues in the grade 8 and grade 11 US history courses.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
