Start 30 days freeYes, there is a Christian homeschool English and reading curriculum that runs from phonics through twelfth grade: Letters & Devotion starts with Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics for kindergarten to grade 2, then has a grade-level English Language Arts course for each year from grade 3 to grade 12, all following the Common Core State Standards, plus a creative writing course and a speech course.
Learning to read
Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics is a 5-unit course for kindergarten to grade 2, and reading is taught as systematic phonics. Clara can read aloud, you can mute her, and for a child too young to type a grown-up can type what they say. When an answer is wrong she explains the mistake instead of marking it.
Grades 3 to 8
Reading, Thinking, Writing (grade 3), Reading and Writing with Evidence (grade 4), Reading Closely, Writing Clearly (grade 5), Reading, Reasoning, and Writing (grade 6), Reading Arguments, Writing Positions (grade 7) and Structure, Irony, and Argument (grade 8). Each is 8 units, and Research Literacy for the Web Era (3 units, grade 7) sits alongside.
High school
Grade 9 is English 9: Reading and Writing the Human Story (9 units) and grade 10 is English 10: Identity, Society, and the Stories We Tell (8 units). Grade 11 is American Voices, American Arguments: Literature and Rhetoric in Context (8 units) and grade 12 is Literature, Rhetoric, and the Examined Life (8 units).
Creative writing and speech
Craft and Revision: A Creative Writing Workshop (grade 11) and Speech and Communication: Composing, Delivering, and Evaluating Spoken Argument (grade 10) are 4 units each. Both are listed beside the grade-level English courses, not in place of them.
Beside the Bible, not inside it
Every grade also has its own King James Bible course of 36 lessons, a separate course from English, and the week opens with the Bible read at the table together. Courses are mastery paced, so a child can be at a different level in English than in math.
What this is not
- There is no separate English course for grade 1 or grade 2. English in those years is the K-2 phonics course, and grade-level English language arts begins in grade 3.
- The catalog lists no course titled handwriting, spelling, grammar or vocabulary. Read the units of a grade's English course to see where those skills sit, and add a separate program if you want one.
- English follows the Common Core State Standards, so a family that wants to avoid Common Core should look elsewhere. Clara is an artificial intelligence, not a human tutor.
