Start 30 days freeMost parents who want Spanish for a seventh grader do not speak it. Empecemos! Spanish for Middle School puts that work on Clara, who talks with your child in Spanish and English for about twenty minutes a day. It has four units and 12+ hours, and you do not need any Spanish.
The four units
First Words That Work. Mi Mundo, My World. Out in the World. Stories and Plans. Each is nine weeks, with one module a week.
A cognate safari and an 'I don't understand'
Unit 1 covers hello, names, feelings, counting to 39, where you are from, the alphabet, and a week proving your child already knows hundreds of Spanish words. They learn to say 'I don't understand' in Spanish, so being lost is something they can recover from.
Their own life first
Unit 2 is family, with pets, describing people, likes and dislikes, school, the days of the week, a daily routine and telling time. The guide's goal is a five-minute conversation about their own family, week and opinions.
Pretend cafes and market haggling
Unit 3 is survival Spanish through games. Your child orders food, asks how much and buys something, asks where things are, gets around town and talks about the weather and their home. It ends with a whole errand in Spanish.
Yesterday, plans and a favorite
Unit 4 covers what they did yesterday, a tiny story, what they are going to do, invitations, how they feel, and comparing things to defend a favorite. A music tour of the Spanish-speaking world comes in a culture week, and the year ends with a show-off week.
Corrections that do not feel like corrections
When your child says something wrong, Clara says it back right and keeps talking. The guide calls this how your child learned English, and says the sillier the practice voices, the faster embarrassment about sounding wrong fades.
What this is not
- It is not a grammar course. Clara never teaches grammar, so a child who needs conjugation tables explained will not get them here.
- It is not a quiz course. The phrase list is a preview, and the checkpoints in weeks 9, 18, 27 and 35 are conversations, not tests.
- It is not a high school credit course. The guide says middle school pacing means more games, more culture and shorter sessions than the high school course.

Questions parents ask
Do I need to know Spanish?
No. The guide says there is nothing to buy and nothing to know. A quiet spot and a microphone make speaking practice better, but typing works fine.
How much time does it take?
One module a week, about twenty minutes a day. Culture weeks are lighter.
Where does it end up?
By the end your child can introduce themselves, survive a pretend shop, tell a small story and argue about which game is best, in Spanish.
What does it cost?
$29 a month or $290 a year for every child. The first 30 days are free with no card.
