Letters & Devotion handles that: a child can work at different grade levels in different subjects, because you set a grade for each child, add or remove individual courses from the whole K-12 catalog, and every module is paced by mastery rather than by the calendar. Showing a skill early unlocks the next one the same day, and struggling slows the course down automatically.

The grade is a setting, per child

You choose a grade for each child and can change it whenever you like. Setting a grade enrols them in that grade's courses, and you can add or remove courses to suit them.

Then mix by subject

On top of the grade, you can add or remove individual courses from any grade in the catalog. Mathematics 7 beside the Grade 3 English Language Arts course (eight units each) is an ordinary configuration, and a child still learning to read can be given Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics, a K-2 course, while their math sits at grade level.

The pace follows mastery inside each course

Every module is mastery paced. A child who shows they have a skill moves to the next one the same day, and a child who struggles slows the course down automatically. So even within one subject the speed is the child's, not the calendar's.

Read the course before you pick the level

Every course, unit, skill and learning objective is published in full with no account, and the scope and sequence at /scope-and-sequence lists every course in teaching order on one printable page. That is how you decide which level a subject should start at.

The record follows the child

Hours log per course as your child works, and the transcript shows what was taught and mastered. A child at grade 5 in one subject and grade 7 in another simply has those courses on the record.

What this is not

  • It does not diagnose, test or label. It cannot tell you why a child is ahead or behind, and you still choose which course level each subject starts at.
  • More flexibility means more decisions for you. A mixed configuration is yours to set up and review, and you judge the right level by reading the course.
  • The catalog runs from kindergarten to grade 12, and some courses cover a band (Learning to Read is K-2, PE for grades 3-5 is one course). A child far ahead in a subject will eventually reach the end of it.

Before your child starts: what we collect and why

We collect only what it takes to teach your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers and progress, and their chat with Clara (written by Anthropic's AI, read aloud by OpenAI). Nobody trains AI on it or sells it, and you can see or delete it any time. You create your child's account yourself. Ticking the box below is how you, as the parent, give consent.

Read what we collect and why

Your consent is needed before we collect anything from your child, and we collect nothing without it. You create your child's account yourself; they never sign up alone.

  • What we collect from your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers, time on lessons and progress, and their chat with Clara. Used to run the lessons, build their transcript and show you how they are doing.
  • Who else handles it: Anthropic writes Clara's replies from the chat, the lesson and your child's first name. OpenAI turns lesson text and Clara's replies into the read-aloud voice. Spoken answers are turned into text on our own server and never sent anywhere. Our email provider sends you reports. Nobody sells your child's data or uses it for anything else.
  • Your rights: see everything collected from your child, have it deleted, or stop further collection at any time, from your account or by emailing our support address. If you refuse the sharing above, Clara cannot teach, so the service cannot run. Chats are deleted after 30 days.
  • Safety: if your child writes something suggesting they may be hurt or in danger, we email you and the owner of Letters & Devotion the same day.

Ticking the box below is how you, as the parent, give that consent. Full details, including how long we keep each thing: Privacy Policy (version 2026-10-09).

Questions parents ask

Can my child be in 5th grade math and 3rd grade reading?

Yes. Set a grade for the child, then add or remove individual courses from any grade in the catalog. Nothing checks the courses against their age.

What happens if my child masters a skill early?

Showing a skill early unlocks the next one the same day, so they do not wait for the calendar.

What if my child is struggling in just one subject?

Struggling slows that course down automatically, and the other subjects keep their own pace.

Can I change a level partway through the year?

Yes. The grade can be changed whenever you like, and individual courses can be added or removed for any child.
