Letters & Devotion is used by families, and that includes children. We collect the minimum needed to run an adaptive course and produce your records, we show no ads, we sell no data, and the parent controls every child account, including deleting it.
Children never sign themselves up. A child's account can only be created by the parent who runs the family's Letters & Devotion account, from inside that account, creating it is how the parent gives consent for the child's use of the service. A child's sign-in does not need to be a real email address, and we encourage using one that isn't (like maya@family.home).
From a child we collect: the first name and sign-in the parent chose, the child's learning-preference answers, and their learning activity, answers given, time spent, hints used, and the mastery scores computed from them. That's what powers the adaptive course and your transcript. We collect nothing else from children: no location, no contacts, no photos, no browsing outside the app.
Parents can see everything their child has done, change the child's password, and delete the child's account and its data by contacting us (a self-serve delete is coming; until then, deletion requests are honored promptly).
Your name, email, password (stored hashed), your family name for the account, and your use of the parent tools. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card number.
Reading and phonics lessons can let a child answer by speaking, because saying a word is the skill being learned. This is off unless you turn it on, separately for each child, on your Students page, and you can turn it off again at any time.
When it is on, the microphone is live only while your child is holding the talk button. There is no background listening and nothing is recorded when the button is not held. The recording is sent to our speech provider (OpenAI), turned into text so the teacher can reply to what was said, and then discarded. We never store audio of your child. There is no voice recording in our database, nothing to download, and nothing to delete later, because nothing is kept. The recording is not used to identify your child and is never used for advertising or to train anyone's models.
Fly.io (hosting), Stripe (payments, parents only), Resend (email to parents only, such as password resets), Anthropic (the built-in teacher's replies), and OpenAI (reading lesson text aloud, and turning a spoken answer into text when you have switched that on). Each receives only what its job requires.
Ask us at any time to export or delete your family's data, yours or any child's. Deleting the family account deletes the children's accounts with it. We keep data only while your account exists, plus what payment law requires Stripe-side.
Letters & Devotion is operated by Professor C's Academy LLC, a company registered in the United States, which is the data controller for everything described above. Privacy questions or deletion requests: the feedback button inside the app, or the account email on your invoice. If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell parents by email before it takes effect.
