Start 30 days freeYes. Computer Science Principles: Computation, Data, and Society is a grade 10 course of eight units and 56+ hours. It starts with no assumptions about coding and ends with a student writing real Python programs and arguing with evidence about how computing affects people.
The eight units
Thinking Like a Computer: Algorithms Before Syntax. Python as a Notation. Organizing Data: Lists, Strings, and Iteration Patterns. Abstraction in Code: Functions and Program Design. Data Underneath: Bits, Encoding, and Representation. How the Internet Works. Attack Surface: Cybersecurity and Privacy. Capstone: Computing and Its Consequences.
Thinking first, then code
A child learns to think a problem through step by step before touching code, then uses Python as the notation for that thinking.
Free tools in a browser
Every tool is free and runs in a browser, so there is no software to install.
The capstone
Students investigate a real tech-and-society question, such as whether an algorithm's unequal outcomes are a bug or something worse.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It cannot promise any college will accept a homeschool transcript. It prints one of what was taught and mastered, and your family issues it.
- It has no course labeled AP, though the title echoes the Principles framework.
