The three units
How Information Gets Organized and Ranked. Sorting Sources: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Wikipedia. SIFT: Evaluating Sources and Spotting Manipulation.
A four-step method
SIFT is a concrete method for checking whether something is trustworthy without falling for slick design or a scary headline.
Kinds of source
A child learns to tell someone who was there from someone summarizing from an encyclopedia pointing elsewhere.
A real question
It ends with a student picking a real question they care about, researching it and writing up not just what they found but how much they trust each source.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is a short course, one semester or less, and a starting point rather than a full research curriculum.
- It cannot promise any college will accept a homeschool transcript. It prints one of what was taught and mastered, and your family issues it.
