Start 30 days freePlace Value, Parts, and Space: Grade 5 Mathematics is a full year of fifth-grade math, eight units and 22+ hours, built around three ideas: how the number system extends into decimals, how fractions behave, and how measurement and space model real things. It follows the Common Core State Standards.
The eight units
Place Value to the Thousandths. Decimal Arithmetic. Multi-Digit Division. Adding and Subtracting Fractions. Multiplying Fractions. Dividing Unit Fractions. Volume: Packing and Multiplying. The Coordinate Plane and Numerical Patterns.
A picture first
Every new skill gets a picture before the shortcut: blocks, an area drawing, a number line, a fraction bar.
The goal by June
A child can add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals and fractions without hesitating, and plot and read points on a graph.
The runway
That is what sixth grade assumes, and Ratios, Relationships, and the Number System is the grade 6 course.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is not a speed drill. The point is that a child knows why the shortcut works.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
