The eight units
Exponents, Powers, and Scientific Notation. The Real Number System. Linear Equations in One Variable. Functions. Transformations, Congruence, Similarity, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Linear Relationships: Slope, Proportionality, and Systems. Systems of Linear Equations: Modeling and Application. Bivariate Data and Lines of Fit.
The shift it makes
This is the year math stops being follow the steps for this kind of problem and becomes figure out what kind of problem this even is. A child meets numbers that never end or repeat, equations that can have no answer or infinite answers, and what a function actually is.
Where it leads
By the end a student has the runway Algebra I assumes: exponents, slope and straight-line graphs, solving two equations at once, and reading scattered data for a trend. Algebra I is the grade 9 course in the same catalog.
Not locked to a grade
You set the grade for each child and can change it at any time, and you can add courses from any grade. A child ready for pre-algebra in seventh grade can take it there.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is a screen-based course, so some of the work is reading what your child writes and asking why.
- A student who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
