The eight units
Place Value to 1000: Bundles of Ten. Adding and Subtracting Within 100. Equal Groups and Arrays: The Road to Multiplication. Measuring Length and Time in Standard Units. Money: Counting and Comparing Coin and Bill Values. Shapes and Their Attributes. Fractions as Equal Shares: Halves, Thirds, and Fourths. Year-End Integration: Mixed Problem Solving.
Hold it first, write it second
Every idea arrives first as something a child can hold, blocks or coins or paper shapes or a ruler, before it becomes a written number sentence.
What the year builds
A child learns what the digits in 347 mean, adds and subtracts two-digit numbers with regrouping, and meets multiplication as equal rows and columns before it has a name.
The goal by June
Your child can read a word problem with no label on it and work out for themselves which kind of math it is asking for.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is not worksheet drill. Most of the work is at the table with things your child can touch.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
