Start 30 days freeReading Arguments, Writing Positions: Grade 7 English Language Arts is eight units and 34+ hours built around one question a child answers in harder and harder situations: is this argument actually any good, and why? It follows the Common Core State Standards.
The eight units
Tracing and Testing an Argument. Two Sides, Same Facts: Comparing Points of View. A Perspective Sustained: Novel Study. Myths, Archetypes, and Cultural Point of View. The Speaker's Stake: Poetry and Inference. Staged Conflict: Drama and Contrasting Motives. Evaluating Sources. The Research Argument: Position, Evidence, Counterclaim.
Four moves, every time
Find the claim, check whether the evidence backs it up, notice that other people see it differently and say why, and answer the other side instead of ignoring it.
From opinion pieces to research
A child starts with short opinion pieces, moves to a novel, then myths, poems and a play, and ends the year writing their own research paper.
The goal by June
A child can pick up a speech, a poem or a website they have never seen and do all four moves without being told.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is not a grammar workbook.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
