Start 30 days freeStructure, Irony, and Argument: Grade 8 English Language Arts is an eighth-grade course of eight units and 34+ hours. Instead of reading stories and writing reports, a child learns to notice how a writer builds a piece. It follows the Common Core State Standards.
The eight units
Reading the Architecture of a Story: Structure and Dramatic Irony. Claim, Evidence, and the Shape of an Argument. Writing to Explain: Organizing Information for a Reader. Irony and Structure at Scale: Reading a Full-Length Drama. Writing Narrative: Structure and Craft in the Student's Own Story. Text and Context: Reading Historical Fiction Against the Historical Record. Competing Arguments: Reading Two Sides of the Same Question. Research and Argument: Building a Claim from Multiple Sources.
What a writer did on purpose
Why an author reveals a secret early, why an essay compares instead of lists, why two people can argue honestly to opposite conclusions from the same facts.
Five pieces, revised
An argument essay, an explainer essay, a short story, a historical fiction scene and a research paper, each revised more than once.
The goal by June
A child can read a play, a historical novel or a pair of dueling op-eds and explain what the writer did on purpose and why.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is not a grammar workbook.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
