Bible: In the Beginning, a Kindergarten Year in Genesis

Grade K

Genesis, once through, in a year. You read the passage aloud, tell it back in ordinary words, learn a short verse together, ask three questions, and do one small thing. Twenty minutes, three times a week, and no marking.

Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics

Grade K-2

This teaches reading the way the research says reading works: sounds first, taught explicitly, in a careful order. Schools call it systematic synthetic phonics. Clara teaches each sound out loud and plays the blending games with your child that a good reception teacher would. Your child then shows they can read by tapping the right printed word. The question is spoken aloud; the answer words never are, because reading them is the whole point. Every word your child is asked to read uses only sounds already taught. We check that mechanically when the course is built, so it is a promise rather than a hope.

Numbers, Shapes, and Stories: Kindergarten Mathematics

Grade K

You run this one, and we hand you the words. Every lesson opens with a short story you tell out loud and ends with your child tapping a picture to answer, so nothing has to be read or typed at any point. It is kindergarten math done with things a child can pick up: blocks, buttons, fingers, pictures on a screen. By June they can count to 100, count out and compare groups of things, add and subtract by acting out little stories with real objects, say why 14 means one ten and four ones, and name the basic flat and solid shapes wherever they turn up. First grade assumes a child arrives already counting and comparing, and already sure that numbers stand for real amounts of real things. That is the year this builds.

You run one small hands-on exploration a week from a script, and we tell you what to grab, what to say, and what to listen for. Clara then checks in with your child on screen for five minutes, out loud. The learning happens at the sink and on the sidewalk with you next to them. The app's job is to keep the record of it.

From week 11 you also add a drawing to a paper map of the journey that runs along a wall. Twenty minutes, three times a week, and nothing to mark.

Tens, Ones, and Adventures: Grade 1 Mathematics

Grade 1

A full year of first-grade math in short daily sessions, run by you rather than by a textbook. You get a script to read and your child answers by tapping, so no teaching background is needed. Your child starts by counting objects and comparing groups, learns what the equals sign actually means, gets quick at adding and subtracting within 10 and then within 20 using a make-a-ten trick, comes to see two-digit numbers as bundles of tens and ones, compares and adds them, measures things, reads clocks, and finishes by sorting data and cutting shapes into equal pieces. Every new idea begins with objects your child can touch, counters and straws and bundles, before a single number or symbol shows up on paper.

Bible: Kings, Prophets and a Promise, a Second Grade Year

Grade 2

Judges, kings and prophets in a year, ending on the promise the Old Testament is leaning toward. Each week you read a short passage aloud from the King James, tell it back in the plain words printed under it, learn one verse, ask three questions, and do one thing. At seven the doing starts to include a pencil: copying the verse, writing a sentence, making a list. Twenty to thirty minutes, three times a week.

Number, Shape, and Measure: Grade 2 Mathematics

Grade 2

A full second-grade math year built for one adult and one child at a kitchen table. Your child moves from understanding what the digits in a number like 347 mean, to adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping, to meeting multiplication before it has a name in the form of equal rows and columns. Then it goes outward: measuring with a ruler, telling time to five minutes, counting coins, naming shapes by their sides and corners, splitting a pizza fairly into thirds. Every idea arrives first as something they can hold, blocks or coins or paper shapes or a ruler, before it becomes a written number sentence. By June your child can read an unlabelled word problem and work out for themselves which kind of math it is asking for.

Bible: The Old Testament, a Third Grade Survey

Grade 3

The whole Old Testament in a year, in order, with your child now reading some of it out loud themselves. Thirty-nine books in thirty-six weeks: the law, the history, the poetry and wisdom, and the prophets. A paper timeline goes up on a wall in week 1 and gets added to all year. In the last week your child walks it from creation to Malachi and tells the whole story without help.

Reading, Thinking, Writing: Grade 3 English Language Arts

Grade 3

This is a full-year, 5-day-a-week reading and writing course for third grade. Your child will read short stories and nonfiction pieces, learn to back up every answer with the exact sentence that proves it, and end up writing three kinds of pieces: an opinion, an informative report, and a personal story. Nothing here is abstract grammar drilling — grammar gets taught right inside whatever they're reading or writing that week. By spring, they'll be pulling facts from two different sources, comparing them, and writing multi-paragraph pieces on their own, which is exactly what 4th grade assumes they can already do.

This is the year multiplication and division actually click - not as a set of memorized facts, but as pictures your child can draw and reason from. Everything else in the year - measuring area, comparing fractions, reading a graph - turns out to be that same equal-groups picture wearing a different hat. By June, your child should be able to look at a rectangle, a clock, or a bar graph and say "oh, this is just groups of things again."

Investigating Our World: Forces, Life, and Earth Systems

This is a full year of science that adds up to one idea: things change, and you can figure out why if you look for patterns and back up your claims with actual measurements instead of guesses. Your child pushes and pulls real objects, tests magnets, grows a bean plant, measures traits, looks at fossils, and keeps a weather log — all with stuff you already have at home. By the end they've used four words — force, pattern, trait, evidence — in eight totally different situations, which is the actual point: not memorizing facts about frogs or magnets, but getting comfortable saying "here's what I measured, here's the pattern, here's what I think it means."

Communities Near and Far

Grade 3

This is a full year of social studies that answers one question from a bunch of angles: how do people organize their lives together, and why does it look different from place to place? Your child starts with groups they already belong to — family, class, town — then learns to read maps and globes, compares communities around the world and across time, meets local and national government, and learns basic economics like trade and scarcity. It ends with them picking a real problem in their own town and writing an actual proposal to fix it, using everything from the year. There's no test-and-forget structure here — later units keep reusing words and skills from earlier ones, so gaps show up fast and get noticed.

Bible: The Gospels and Acts, a Fourth Grade Year

Grade 4

The life of Jesus told once, in the order it happened, taking each episode from whichever of the four Gospels tells it best, and then Acts. Your child reads part of the passage aloud, tells it back without looking, and writes four or five sentences of it in a notebook they keep all year. That notebook asks one question three times, in week 1, week 20 and week 36: who do you say that I am. There is no quiz and nothing to mark.

Reading and Writing with Evidence: Grade 4 ELA

Grade 4

This is a year of teaching a fourth-grader to back up what they say about a story or article with actual lines from the text, not vibes. They learn to figure out what a story is really about underneath the plot, to shrink a long article into a true short version instead of a retell, to notice when a chart is technically true but misleading, and to write three kinds of paragraphs — opinion, informative, narrative — that stay on topic. By the end they should be able to look at a mixed bag of reading and writing tasks and figure out on their own what kind of thinking each one wants.

Health for Grades 3-5

Grade 4

This is a semester of health for a 4th grader, taught by you, 50 minutes a day, 5 days a week. It's not about grades or gym class — it's about your kid learning to think of their own body as something they run and take care of. They'll figure out why food, sleep, and movement matter (not for looks, but for what those things actually do inside them), how germs spread and why washing hands matters even when no one's watching, the safety rules for fire, streets, bikes, being online, and medicine, and finally how to name feelings, calm down, and be a decent friend when things get hard. Nothing here touches weight, appearance, or sex — it stays squarely in "how do I take care of this body and these relationships" territory.

Grade 4 Mathematics: Place Value, Operations, and Fractions

Grade 4

This is the year your child moves from "school arithmetic" into "real math." They'll learn to name numbers up to a million, add and subtract big numbers reliably, multiply and divide multi-digit numbers using a picture-based method that actually explains why the standard steps work, and then take that same understanding into fractions and decimals. It ends with converting units, measuring angles, and sorting shapes by their properties instead of by "what they look like." Every new skill starts as a drawing — boxes, bars, a number line — before it turns into digits on a page, so your child always has something to point at when they get confused.

Energy, Waves, and Living Systems: Grade 4 Science

Grade 4

This is a full year of hands-on science built around one big idea: energy moves from place to place, and you can trace where it goes. Your child starts by smashing marbles into dominoes and rolling balls down ramps, then uses that same "energy went somewhere" thinking to understand waves, light, sound, how eyes and ears work, why cactus spines and mole eyes look the way they do, how rivers carve canyons, and finally why a dam or a wind farm is never a free lunch. It's mostly kitchen-table materials — flashlights, mirrors, string and cups, rulers, a tray of sand or dirt for a mini streambed — with a fair number of "why does it do that" arguments your child has to back up with actual evidence, not just a hunch.

Regions of the United States: Land, People, and Government

Grade 4

This is a year-long tour of the United States done region by region — Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, West — plus a final unit on how state and federal government fit together. Your child will read real maps and charts as evidence (not just look at pretty pictures), meet named indigenous nations as governments that still exist today, and figure out why a place with rocky soil built ports and cities while a place with rich soil built farms. By the end they should be able to look at any U.S. region and explain why the land, the people, and the government there look the way they do.

Reading Closely, Writing Clearly: Grade 5 English Language Arts

Grade 5

This is a full year of 5th grade reading and writing. The whole year rests on one habit: when your child claims something about a story or an article, they have to back it up with the text's exact words, not a vague memory of what it said. From there they learn to compare two characters, notice how the narrator's viewpoint limits what a story tells you, see how chapters or stanzas build on each other, and pull facts from two different articles on one topic. Then the second half of the year turns around and uses everything they just read as material for their own writing — a story, an opinion essay, and an informative piece. Nothing gets read once and dropped; the same stories and articles come back again and again as the source material for later units.

Grade 5

This is a full year of fifth-grade math built around three ideas: how our number system extends into decimals, how fractions behave when you combine or split them, and how measurement and space help you model real things like boxes and graphs. Every new skill gets a picture first — blocks, an area drawing, a number line, a fraction bar — before your child ever sees the shortcut version. By June, they should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals and fractions without hesitating, and plot and read points on a graph. That's the runway sixth grade assumes they already have.

Matter, Systems, and the Sky: Grade 5 Science

Grade 5

This is a year of science built around one big idea: everything is made of tiny particles you can't see, and those particles don't just vanish — they move around, combine, and rearrange, but the total amount stays put. Your child uses that one idea to explain four very different things over the year: why sugar water still weighs what it should, why rust is different from melting ice, where a tree's mass actually comes from, and why some water is drinkable and some isn't. The last quarter of the year zooms out to Earth as a whole system, then out further to the sun and stars, reusing the same vocabulary the whole way. Almost everything is testable with stuff already in your kitchen — a scale, a balloon, sugar, a flashlight.

The American Story Begins: Peoples, Contact, and a New Nation

Grade 5

This is a year-long American history course that starts before Columbus and ends with the Constitution. Your child will learn that North America was full of established nations before Europeans showed up, then trace why Europeans crossed the ocean, how colonies grew up differently region by region (including the ugly reality of slavery and indentured servitude), why the colonies broke from Britain, how the war was actually won, and how the country built — then rebuilt — its own government. By June they should be able to read a real historical document and make an argument from it, not just recite dates.

Bible: How to Read the Bible, and the Life of Christ

Grade 6

Nine weeks learning how to read the different kinds of writing in the Bible, nine weeks on the five covenants that hold the Old Testament together, then eighteen weeks in the life of Christ read slowly with both of those in hand. Your student reads the King James passage themselves, talks through three questions with you, and writes something nearly every week in one notebook kept all year. The writing is the assessment. There is no quiz.

Reading, Reasoning, and Writing: Grade 6 English Language Arts

Grade 6

This is a full year of 6th grade reading and writing built entirely on free material — old public-domain stories, folktales, speeches, and open nonfiction, so you won't be buying a textbook or novel set. The whole year trains one core habit: don't just tell me what you think a text means, show me the exact line that proves it. From that habit, your child learns to tell the difference between what a story is about (topic) and what it's actually saying (theme), to read figurative language as a choice the author made on purpose, to compare two accounts of the same event, and to write three kinds of essays — argument, informative, and story — each one reusing skills from the reading units instead of starting from scratch.

Ratios, Relationships, and the Number System

Grade 6

This is the year your child learns to think in ratios instead of just counting differences — "for every 3 of these, 2 of those" instead of "3 more of these." That one idea (a multiplicative relationship between two quantities) gets used all year: to divide fractions, to make sense of negative numbers, to write algebra expressions, to compute area and volume, and finally to describe a set of data. By June they should be comfortable with signed numbers, one-step equations, decimals in all four operations, basic area/volume/surface area, and describing a data set with center and spread — not as nine separate topics, but as one idea applied nine times.

This is a full year of Earth science that keeps circling back to one idea: a small handful of causes — gravity, heat moving around, matter cycling through different forms — explain almost everything Earth does, from why the moon looks different each night to why hurricanes and earthquakes happen where they do. Your child starts by watching patterns in the sky, then works down into rock and inside the Earth, then out into water and weather, and finishes by using all of it to think about real disasters and real human choices. Every hands-on activity uses stuff you already have in the kitchen or garage. By June they should be able to look at almost any Earth event on the news and explain, in their own words, what's actually causing it.

The Ancient World: Peoples, Power, and Place

Grade 6

This is a year-long tour of the ancient world — early farmers, then Mesopotamia, Egypt and Kush, India, China, Greece, and Rome — ending with Rome's fall. Your child learns why cities and kings and laws showed up where and when they did, not just names and dates. Along the way they practice reading old documents skeptically (who wrote this, and why should I believe them?), reading maps and timelines, and writing short arguments backed by evidence. Every religion or belief system in the course is studied the way a historian studies it — what people believed and how it shaped their laws and daily life — never as something to practice or adopt.

Grade 6-8

Clara talks with your child in Spanish and English for about twenty minutes a day, using more Spanish as they cope. She never teaches grammar: when they say it wrong she says it back right and keeps talking, which is how your child learned English. Middle school pacing: more games, more culture, shorter sessions than the high school course. By June they can introduce themselves, survive a pretend shop, tell a small story, and argue about which game is best, in Spanish.

Thirty-six weeks in the New Testament after the Gospels, in roughly the order it happened: the church spreading out of Jerusalem, Paul's three journeys with his letters set down where he actually wrote them, the letters written from custody and under Nero, and nine weeks in Revelation read as the letter to seven real towns that it is. Your student does the reading. Most weeks end in something written.

Grade 7

This is a full year of 7th grade English built around one question your child will keep answering in harder and harder situations: is this argument actually any good, and why? They start with short opinion pieces, move to a novel, then myths, poems, a play, and end the year writing their own research paper. The same four moves show up every single time — find the claim, check if the evidence actually backs it up, notice that other people see it differently and say why, and answer the other side instead of ignoring it. By June they should be able to pick up something they've never seen — a speech, a poem, a website — and do all four moves without being told to.

Health for Middle School

Grade 7

This is a semester of health class built around one idea: the body is a system your kid runs every day, not a shape to judge. First it covers the daily basics — food, sleep, movement, cleanliness. Then it moves outward to protecting that body from fires, germs, traffic, and online strangers. Then it tackles nicotine and vaping head-on, using the biology from unit one to explain why those products hook people. It ends by pulling together the "who do I tell" and "how do I say no" skills from the earlier units into one flexible habit your kid can use for anything — a bad friendship, a stressful week, a stranger online, a family problem. By the end, the goal isn't that they memorized facts about health. It's that they have a couple of concrete routines (read a label, trace how germs spread, refuse pressure in four steps, name a trusted adult) they can actually run when it matters.

Mathematics 7: Proportional Reasoning and Rational Number Systems

Grade 7

This is the year math stops being "follow the recipe" and starts being "here's the rule, and here's why it's true." Your kid will spend the fall pinning down what "proportional" really means and learning to compute with negative numbers, fractions, and decimals the same way. In winter they turn that into algebra — expressions and equations they can solve and explain. In spring they point all of it at geometry (scale drawings, angles, circles, 3D shapes) and finish with probability and sampling, which is really just ratios and rates wearing a different hat. By June they should be able to look at a table, a graph, or a word problem and immediately ask "is this proportional?" and "what's actually equal to what here?" — and answer both.

Listening Across Cultures: An Introduction to Music Appreciation

Grade 7

This is a listening course, not a performing course. Your child doesn't need an instrument, doesn't need to read music, and won't be graded on singing or playing anything. What they're learning is how to listen closely — to hear that a piece got louder, or that a tune repeated with a twist, or that a drum sound and a string sound are made in totally different physical ways — and say specifically what they heard and when. It covers music from Africa, East Asia, Latin America, Europe or the Middle East, and traces a thread from old written music through recordings to electronic music. It ends with them picking five songs and defending, in writing, why those five belong together.

Finding, Judging, and Using Information: Research Literacy for the Web Era

Grade 7

This course teaches your kid that search results, library catalogs, and social feeds don't hand them "the truth" — they hand them the output of a system with rules, and sometimes money, behind it. Over a semester they learn how those systems rank things, how to tell what kind of source they're looking at (someone who was there vs. someone summarizing vs. an encyclopedia pointing elsewhere), and a concrete four-step method (SIFT) for checking whether something is actually trustworthy without falling for slick design or a scary headline. It ends with them picking a real question they care about, researching it for real, and writing up not just what they found but how much they trust each source and why. The payoff isn't trivia about the internet — it's a habit of leaving the page to check, instead of reading harder.

Life Science: Systems, Energy, and Change

Grade 7

This is a year of biology built as one long chain, not eight separate topics. Your child starts by looking at real cells under a household microscope, then zooms out step by step: cells make organs, organs make body systems, cells run on the photosynthesis/respiration energy story, ecosystems run on that same energy story at a bigger scale, populations live inside ecosystems, heredity explains why individuals in a population differ, and natural selection explains how that variation changes a population over generations. By June they use all of it together to build an evidence argument for how two species are related. The payoff is that biology stops being a pile of vocabulary and starts being one story they can trace from a single cell to a whole ecosystem.

World Geography and the Medieval World, 500-1500 CE

Grade 7

This is a year-long trip around the medieval world, region by region: the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic caliphates, West African trading kingdoms, China, Japan, the Maya and Aztec, and finally Europe from its post-Rome collapse into the early Renaissance. In every region your child asks the same three questions: who's in charge and why do people accept it, how do goods and ideas actually move from place to place, and how does what people believe organize daily life. They read real historical documents (translated, age-appropriate) and practice telling a reliable source from a shaky one. Religion shows up throughout, but it's treated the way a historian treats it — as a force that shapes law, trade, and power — not as something to believe in or reject personally.

This is a semester where your child learns to actually see art, not just look at it. They start by making the basic building blocks — line, shape, value, texture — with a pencil and paper, then learn a simple four-step way of talking about any piece of art (describe it, dig into how it's built, guess what it means, decide if it works). Once they can do that, they use it to look at real art from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe, and end up understanding why a Japanese woodblock print and a Renaissance painting are both "right" — just playing by different rules. It ends with them picking their five best pieces from the whole semester and writing about them like a real artist would.

Structure, Irony, and Argument: Grade 8 English Language Arts

Grade 8

This is an eighth-grade English course that gets kids ready for the reading and writing they'll hit in high school. Instead of just reading stories and writing reports, your child learns to notice HOW a writer builds a piece — why an author reveals a secret early, why an essay compares instead of lists, why two people can argue honestly to opposite conclusions using the same facts. They'll write an argument essay, an explainer essay, a short story, a historical fiction scene, and a research paper, revising each one more than once. By the end they can read a play, a historical novel, or a pair of dueling op-eds and explain what the writer did on purpose and why.

Pre-Algebra: Foundations for Algebra I

Grade 8

This is the year math stops being "follow the steps for this kind of problem" and starts being "figure out what kind of problem this even is." Your child will learn to handle really big and really small numbers with exponents, meet numbers that never end or repeat (like square roots that don't come out clean), solve equations that can honestly have no answer or infinite answers, understand what a function actually is, prove shapes are the same or similar instead of just eyeballing it, use the Pythagorean theorem, work with slope and straight-line graphs, solve two equations at once, and read real scattered data for a trend. By June this feeds directly into Algebra I, which assumes all of it is already solid — not something to re-teach.

Your child will build one imaginary (or real, your call) household budget in week one and then keep adding to that same household all semester — a paycheck, then a budget, then savings that grow over time, then a credit card and some insurance, and finally a full plan where all of it has to work together. By the end they should be able to look at a job offer, a savings goal, a credit card statement, or an insurance decision and actually reason through it instead of guessing.
