Bible: Out of Egypt
A first grade year in Exodus and Joshua, in four units: Moses, Out and Free, The Long Way, and Into the Land. It is read in the King James Version, with a short verse to learn.
Grade 1 mathematics
Tens, Ones, and Adventures covers counting and the number line, what the equals sign really means, adding and subtracting within 10 and within 20, tens and ones to 120, measuring length and telling time, and organising data and composing shapes. It follows the Common Core State Standards.
Reading: systematic phonics
Learning to Read is a K-2 course of five units, from First Sounds, First Words to Real Reading, so a child can start where they are.
Science and social studies
Science Explorations covers weather, sky and seasons, pushes and pulls, living things and their places, and stuff and what it does. My World covers me and my family, rules, jobs and money, maps and places, and people and the past.
How a first grade day goes
Plan on roughly 30 to 50 minutes per subject per day. A young child hears the questions read aloud, answers by tapping, and works beside a grown-up.
What this is not
- A first grader cannot run most lessons alone. Plan to sit with them, especially in phonics and Bible.
- It is a screen-based curriculum, and every course here is on screen except the table part of the Bible lesson.
- The grade is a setting, not a rule. If your child is ahead in math or behind in reading, set courses to where they are.
