Start 30 days freeReading Closely, Writing Clearly: Grade 5 English Language Arts is a full year of reading and writing, eight units and 22+ hours. The year rests on one habit: when a child claims something about a text, they back it up with the text's exact words. It follows the Common Core State Standards.
The eight units
Reading with Evidence: Quoting Accurately. Whose Story Is It? Comparing Characters. Whose Eyes Are We Seeing Through? Point of View. How the Pieces Build: Structure in Stories and Poems. Two Texts, One Topic: Integrating Information. Building a Story: Narrative Writing with Structure. Taking a Side: Opinion Writing with Reasons. Explaining Clearly: Informative Writing and Year-End Synthesis.
Reading first
A child compares two characters, notices how a narrator's viewpoint limits what a story tells, and pulls facts from two articles on one topic.
Then the writing
The second half of the year turns what was read into material for a story, an opinion essay and an informative piece.
Nothing read once and dropped
The same stories and articles come back as source material for later units.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is not a grammar workbook. It is reading and writing built on one habit.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
