Start 30 days freeYes. Letters & Devotion teaches reading as systematic phonics in a K-2 course called Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics, five units long, from First Sounds, First Words to Real Reading. It sits alongside a King James Bible course every year, and a young child works with a grown-up beside them.
The five units, in order
First Sounds, First Words. Words With More in Them. The Vowels Grow Up. The Tricky Vowels. Real Reading. The whole course is published in the scope and sequence, so you can read every unit and skill before your child meets it.
One course across kindergarten to grade 2
It is a single K-2 course of 9+ hours, not a separate course for each year. You set your child's grade and can change it at any time, so you can start a child where they are in reading.
How a young child answers
A kindergartner hears every question read aloud and answers by tapping, never typing. For a child too young to type, a grown-up can type what they say.
Mastery paced
Reading is taught step by step, and the course slows down when a child struggles. When an answer is wrong, Clara, the teacher in every lesson, explains what went wrong instead of only marking it.
Beside the Bible
The Bible course in kindergarten is read aloud together at the table, so a child who cannot yet read still meets Genesis every week while phonics builds toward reading it.
What this is not
- It is a screen-based course. A young child who is still learning to read cannot run a lesson alone, so plan to sit with them.
- It is not an intervention program and does not diagnose a reading difficulty. If you suspect one, an evaluation by a qualified professional is the right step.
- It is one course of 9+ hours. It is the phonics core, not a full literacy library of picture books and read-alouds.

Questions parents ask
What is the phonics course called?
Learning to Read: Systematic Phonics, a K-2 English Language Arts course of five units.
Does my kindergartner have to type?
No. Every question is read aloud and a kindergartner answers by tapping. A grown-up can type for a child who says an answer.
Can I read the lessons before I buy?
Yes. Every unit, skill and objective is published in full with no account and no card, and the first 30 days are free.
Is the Bible part of reading time?
Every grade includes a King James Bible course. In kindergarten you read a short passage aloud and your child tells it back.
