Start 30 days freePhysical Science: Matter, Energy, and Interactions is a full year of physical science, eight units and 34+ hours, built around one idea: matter, heat, sound, light and electricity are tiny particles moving and interacting, and the total amount of mass, energy or charge never disappears. It is in line with the Next Generation Science Standards.
The eight units
The Particle Model of Matter. Chemical Reactions and Conservation of Mass. Forces and Newton's Laws. Energy: Forms, Transfer, and Conservation. Waves: A Model for Energy Transfer. Sound and the Behavior of Mechanical Waves. Light: Waves Without a Medium. Electricity and Magnetism.
Kitchen-table labs
Baking soda and vinegar in a sealed bag, ropes and slinkies, homemade circuits, and a lot of dot-and-arrow diagrams.
Explaining everyday things
Why a hot spoon burns your hand, why a bird can sit on a power line, why a prism makes rainbows, using the particle idea instead of guessing.
Simple math
No equation shows up without a picture or table first, and nothing goes beyond a calculator and a bit of algebra.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It has no Creation unit in the eighth grade science course. Creation units sit in science for grades 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 12.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
