Bible: letters, wisdom and the whole story
Four units, 60+ hours: Letters to Churches, Letters to Everyone, Wisdom for Living, and One Story. About 100 minutes a week for 36 weeks, in the King James Version.
English language arts
Eight units, starting with Reading with Evidence and Comparing Characters, then Point of View, Structure in Stories and Poems, and Integrating Information from two texts. The second half turns to writing a story, an opinion piece and an informative piece. It follows the Common Core State Standards.
Mathematics
Eight units: Place Value to the Thousandths, Decimal Arithmetic, Multi-Digit Division, Adding and Subtracting Fractions, Multiplying Fractions, Dividing Unit Fractions, Volume, and the Coordinate Plane. Every new skill gets a picture first, like a block, an area drawing or a fraction bar.
Science and American history
Matter, Systems, and the Sky runs from particles and conservation of matter through plants and ecosystems, Earth as a system, the water cycle, and the sun and stars, in line with the Next Generation Science Standards. The American Story Begins runs from the nations before contact to the Constitution.
Art, music and PE
Seeing and Making (art), Making Music and Physical Education for grades 3-5 are separate courses, and PE is deliberately off screen with a weekly plan of what to go and do.
What this is not
- It is a lot of courses. Fifth grade has about eight, and you decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- The Creation units sit in the science courses for grades 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 12, so fifth grade science follows the Next Generation Science Standards without one.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course slows down, and you can set courses to a lower grade.
