Start 30 days freeYes. Seeing and Meaning: A History of Visual Analysis is a grade 10 course of eight units and 54+ hours in looking hard at art and arguing about it with evidence. It is not a course where your child paints or draws.
The eight units
Looking Closely: The Vocabulary of Visual Analysis. Ancient Mediterranean and West African Sculpture. Image as Argument in Medieval Europe. Rules for Illusion: Perspective, Naturalism, and the Renaissance Workshop. Impressionism and the Rise of the Avant-Garde. Cubism and Abstraction. The Camera's Argument: Photography. Capstone: Global Contemporary Practice.
Words for how a picture is built
A student learns the vocabulary, line, shape, color, composition and medium, and uses it to explain why a Greek statue, a stained-glass window, a Monet and a Picasso look the way they do.
Real museum images
Every work studied is a real object in a real museum's online collection, so a student always looks at a high-resolution image, not a thumbnail.
Making art is separate
Seeing and Making is the art course for grades 3-5 and grade 7.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It is analysis, not studio art. Your child will not paint or draw in this course.
- It cannot promise any college will accept a homeschool transcript. It prints one of what was taught and mastered, and your family issues it.

Questions parents ask
Is it history or art?
It is listed under social studies at grade 10. How your transcript labels it is up to your family.
Does it count toward a high school transcript?
Hours log themselves and a transcript of what was taught and mastered prints in one click. There is also a free transcript maker at /homeschool-transcript that needs no account.
What does it cost?
$29 a month or $290 a year for every child. The first 30 days are free with no card.
