Bible: the Old Testament read through the New
Four units, 72+ hours: Promise and Fulfillment, Sacrifice, Temple, Priest, Exodus and Exile as Patterns, and Hebrews, a Worked Example. It teaches how the two testaments fit together by watching the New Testament writers read the Old.
Pre-Algebra
Eight units: Exponents and Scientific Notation, the Real Number System, Linear Equations, Functions, Transformations and the Pythagorean Theorem, Slope and Proportionality, Systems of Linear Equations, and Bivariate Data and Lines of Fit. It is the foundation for Algebra I in ninth grade and follows the Common Core State Standards.
English language arts
Eight units, including Structure and Dramatic Irony, Claim, Evidence and the Shape of an Argument, a full-length drama, narrative writing, reading historical fiction against the historical record, Competing Arguments, and a Research and Argument unit built from multiple sources.
Physical science and US history
Physical Science covers the particle model, chemical reactions and conservation of mass, forces and Newton's laws, energy, waves, sound, light, and electricity and magnetism, in line with the Next Generation Science Standards. United States History runs from encounter and colonization through the Constitution, the Civil War and Reconstruction, with civics along the way.
What this is not
- It is a lot of courses. Eighth grade has about eight, and you decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- The Creation units sit in the science courses for grades 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 12, so eighth grade physical science follows the Next Generation Science Standards without one.
- A student who is behind is not stuck. The course slows down, and you can set courses to a lower grade.
