Start 30 days freeMatter, Systems, and the Sky: Grade 5 Science is eight units and 22+ hours built around one big idea: everything is made of tiny particles you cannot see, and those particles move and combine but the total amount stays put. It is in line with the Next Generation Science Standards.
The eight units
Matter Is Made of Particles Too Small to See. Where Did It Go? Conservation of Matter in Mixtures and Dissolving. Physical or Chemical? Sorting Changes in Matter. Following Matter Through Plants, Animals, and Ecosystems. Earth as a System: Land, Water, Air, and Life Interacting. Where Is Earth's Water? Distribution and the Water Cycle. The Sun's Energy and Earth's Patterns. Brightness, Distance, and Patterns in the Night Sky.
One idea, four puzzles
A child uses it to explain why sugar water still weighs what it should, why rust is different from melting ice, where a tree's mass comes from, and why some water is drinkable and some is not.
Stuff from your kitchen
Almost everything is testable with what you already own: a scale, a balloon, sugar, a flashlight.
Zooming out
The last part of the year zooms out to Earth as a whole system and then to the sun and stars, reusing the same vocabulary.
What this is not
- It is one course among many. You decide which to take, which to hold back and how many to do in a day.
- It has no Creation unit in the fifth grade science course. Creation units sit in science for grades 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 12.
- A child who is behind is not stuck. The course is mastery paced and slows down when a child struggles.
