A comparison written by one of the two

Letters & Devotion vs Master Books

We make one of these, so read this the way you would read any comparison written by a seller. What we can do is be specific about our own product, accurate about the shape of theirs, and honest about where they are the better answer. Their current price is on their site, not on this page, and the reason is at the bottom.

What Master Books is

Master Books is the homeschool curriculum line of New Leaf Publishing Group, covering kindergarten through grade 12 in Bible, math, language arts, science, history and electives. Each course is a printed, parent-led set with a daily schedule in a Parent Lesson Planner, so the parent opens the planner and teaches from it. It is built openly on a recent, literal creation and a global Flood, with authors and materials from the same world as Answers in Genesis, and it says so on the cover rather than in the fine print. Families who hold that position have a publisher here that holds it with them and teaches every subject from it. Alongside the books, Master Books Academy sells video-taught online versions of many courses, a recorded teacher working through the same material, bought one course at a time with access for a fixed period.

The pricing difference that actually decides it

Master Books sells each printed course as a one-time purchase per child, with consumable workbooks bought again for the next child, and grade packages that bundle a year. Master Books Academy video courses are bought per course with access for a set number of months, so a full year of subjects is several purchases per child. Their prices are on their own sites and move with sales, so read them there and multiply by subjects and children before comparing to a monthly number.

Letters & Devotion is $29 a month for every child in the household, month to month, with no per-child seats and no course limits. That is $348 a year whether you have one child or four, or $290 a year on the annual plan. The first 30 days are free with no card, and when they end, lessons pause unless you choose to subscribe.

The comparison to run is the same either way: monthly price, times the number of children, times twelve.

When Master Books is the better choice

  • You want a recent, literal creation and a global Flood woven through science, history and Bible alike, from the publisher most consistent about it. Master Books is built on exactly that. Letters & Devotion holds the same position and teaches it in Creation units inside each science course, new in October 2026; Master Books has decades of print behind theirs.
  • You want printed books and a daily schedule you teach from yourself, or a recorded teacher on video for the subjects you would rather not teach. The Parent Lesson Planner is the printed product: open it, do the day. The Academy adds the video. Letters & Devotion has no printed component, no parent script and no lecture video.
  • You want apologetics woven into the younger grades. Their materials teach a child why the family believes what it believes from early on; Letters & Devotion does not reach worldview and apologetics as a course until eleventh grade.
  • You want to buy one course, not a whole curriculum. Master Books sells subject by subject; a family that only needs science this year can buy only science.

Where Letters & Devotion is different

Creation taught, and the choice left with you

Master Books teaches a recent, literal creation throughout and never presents anything else. Letters & Devotion teaches six-day creation to every child, alongside a King James Bible course every year, and lets each family choose at signup whether the evolution lessons are taught alongside it as what mainstream science says, or never shown. Sex education is a family choice here too, from none to puberty plus marriage, purity and abstinence.

A teacher inside the lesson

Clara reads the actual wrong answer your child gave and explains the specific mistake, in conversation. A Master Books course is taught by the parent from the planner, or by a recorded teacher in the Academy version, and either way the answer key marks the answer right or wrong; the video is the same for every child who watches it.

One price for the household

$29 a month covers every child in the family across all 84 courses, with no per-child workbooks and no per-subject purchase. A family with four children pays the same as a family with one.

The whole curriculum readable before you pay

All 84 courses are open in full with no account and no card, every unit, skill and objective in teaching order. Master Books publishes samples and tables of contents; the lessons are inside the books you have bought.

Before your child starts: what we collect and why

We collect only what it takes to teach your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers and progress, and their chat with Clara (written by Anthropic's AI, read aloud by OpenAI). Nobody trains AI on it or sells it, and you can see or delete it any time. You create your child's account yourself. Ticking the box below is how you, as the parent, give consent.

Read what we collect and why

Your consent is needed before we collect anything from your child, and we collect nothing without it. You create your child's account yourself; they never sign up alone.

  • What we collect from your child: the first name and sign-in you choose, their answers, time on lessons and progress, and their chat with Clara. Used to run the lessons, build their transcript and show you how they are doing.
  • Who else handles it: Anthropic writes Clara's replies from the chat, the lesson and your child's first name. OpenAI turns lesson text and Clara's replies into the read-aloud voice. Spoken answers are turned into text on our own server and never sent anywhere. Our email provider sends you reports. Nobody sells your child's data or uses it for anything else.
  • Your rights: see everything collected from your child, have it deleted, or stop further collection at any time, from your account or by emailing our support address. If you refuse the sharing above, Clara cannot teach, so the service cannot run. Chats are deleted after 30 days.
  • Safety: if your child writes something suggesting they may be hurt or in danger, we email you and the owner of Letters & Devotion the same day.

Ticking the box below is how you, as the parent, give that consent. Full details, including how long we keep each thing: Privacy Policy (version 2026-10-09).

Free for 30 days. No card. When the free days end, lessons pause unless you choose to subscribe, $29 a month for every child in the family. Nothing is ever charged without a card.

Questions parents ask

Does Master Books teach the same view of origins as Letters & Devotion?

Yes on creation. Master Books is built on a recent, literal creation and a global Flood and teaches every subject from it; Letters & Devotion holds the same reading of Genesis. Both teach a recent, literal creation. The difference is the choice: Letters & Devotion lets each family decide at signup whether evolution is taught alongside creation as what mainstream science says, and how far sex education goes, and a lesson you turn off is never shown.

Which one needs less of my time?

Letters & Devotion. Clara teaches inside the lesson and you review afterward. The printed Master Books courses are taught by the parent from a daily planner; the Academy video courses hand the lecture to a recorded teacher, with the grading still yours.

Is Letters & Devotion cheaper?

For one child buying one or two subjects, often not. For a family buying a full year of subjects for several children, usually yes: Letters & Devotion is $29 a month for every child, $348 a year. Their prices are on masterbooks.com; multiply by subjects and children before comparing.

Why there is no price for Master Books on this page

We checked in September 2026 and the sources contradicted each other, including the companies' own pages against the review sites. Publishing a competitor's price that turns out to be wrong is unfair to them and useless to you, and any figure here would be out of date within a month anyway. Ours is above, because it is ours and we can stand behind it. Theirs is one click away, on their site, where it is current.
