Moderate requirements

Homeschooling in Hawaii

One form to your local school, a yearly progress report you keep, and testing in four grades.

Getting started (notice)

Form 4140, the exceptions to compulsory education form, or a letter of intent, submitted to the school your child would otherwise attend.

Required subjects

none required by name. The curriculum must be structured, based on educational objectives and the needs of the child, and cumulative and sequential.

Records you must keep

an annual progress report for each child, which you keep. It can be a written evaluation by a Hawaii certified teacher, or one you write yourself covering progress in each subject with samples of work and tests.

Testing / evaluation

standardized testing in grades 3, 5, 8 and 10. You may test at your designated school or arrange private testing at your own expense, and those scores can double as the annual progress report.

Parent qualifications

none.

Where Letters & Devotion fits in Hawaii

Whatever Hawaii asks you to keep, keeping it should not be a job. Letters & Devotion logs instructional hours automatically while your child works, tracks mastery per skill as a ready-made portfolio record, and prints a transcript in one click, so notices, portfolios and evaluations start from records that already exist. The curriculum itself covers every core subject, K through 12.

HSLDA also publishes a plain-language summary of Hawaii's law, at hslda.org/legal/hawaii, and sells a paid legal-defense membership built on top of it. It is an advocacy organization, not a legal authority: its leadership is explicitly Christian, and it lobbies on homeschool legislation, positions a family may or may not share. Read what membership actually costs and covers before joining anything.
