How Clara Teaches: What an AI Teacher Does, and Deliberately Doesn’t
An honest explanation of how Letters & Devotion’s AI teacher works: one-to-one Socratic teaching, age-banded speech, what parents see, and the limits we designed in on purpose.
Every education product now claims AI. Most mean a chatbot bolted onto worksheets. This page explains concretely what Clara, the teacher inside every Letters & Devotion course, actually does, what she refuses to do, and why we built the limits in on purpose. If you are evaluating AI curriculum products, take these questions to all of them.
What Clara does
She teaches every lesson one-to-one, in conversation. She explains an idea, asks a question, waits, and responds to what your child actually said, the loop a tutor runs, at a patience level no human can sustain. When a child answers wrong, the feedback names the specific mistake ("9 looks like 5+4, an added total, a ratio compares the two amounts, not their sum"), because the wrong answers were designed from documented misconceptions in the first place.
She changes with age. A kindergartner hears every question read aloud and answers by tapping, never typing, never reading instructions. A sixth grader types real answers and gets asked "how do you know?". The same platform, four distinct teaching registers, keyed to the course’s grade band.
And in language courses she simply talks with your child, in Spanish and English, using more Spanish as they cope, correcting by restating rather than lecturing, the way children actually acquire languages.
What Clara deliberately does not do
She does not grade by vibes. Mastery comes from your child’s actual answers to fixed, human-reviewable questions, the AI conversation is teaching, not assessment, so a grade can always be traced to demonstrated work.
She does not improvise the curriculum. Every course’s units, skills and questions are fixed, published, and reviewable by you before your child ever sees them. Clara teaches the course; she does not make it up as she goes.
She does not pretend to be human, and neither do her cartoon study-crew companions, we say so to your child directly. And she does not chat off-course: she is a teacher at work, not an open chatbot with your kid.
What you see
Everything. The full scope and sequence of every course is public before you pay. Your dashboard shows what each child worked on, what they mastered and where they are stuck. Hours log themselves; the transcript derives from mastery and prints in one click.
The honest summary: the courses are authored, checked and fixed; the teaching conversation is AI and it is the best part; the records are boring and automatic, exactly as records should be.
